internet v. physical surroundings

in real life, among a group of friends, one person is talking at a time. laughter, tears, debates. Call and response. usually less monologue form, more quick reflexive responses.

the value that the internet adds is that it allows for new types of interpersonal interactions to be made. this can take a few different forms: new types of bonds, previously disconnected groups of people. but imo the most valuable trait is that it prolongs the call and response time. this allows for longer thinking time and higher quality output, and more freedom in response time as well as higher quality responses.

if you’re building something to enhance community, recreating real life interactions could be a viable option. think short form responses (e.g. tiktok comments). but imo the part thats more fun is building out interactions that previously can’t exist.

so far, consumer has been focused on the creation part. and because things are created, they can be consumed (viewed). but the more overlooked aspect lies in the response category, which i find exciting. this doesn’t mean to build on response is to remove creation and consumption altogether. i more just mean shifting our focus ever so slightly. humans love to discuss. in real life, the most extraverted people get to do that. online, however, everyone gets an equal chance.
